The standard for all teachers to apply foundational knowledge of First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the 2018 Teacher Quality Standard may not be as easy in some subject areas due to current curriculum content. This session will assist high school math and sciences teachers, department heads and consultants to share, collaborate and inspire ideas for how to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing into pedagogy and curriculum to create authentic learning connections for all students. Education for Reconciliation is achievable through collaboration and a willingness to learn and grow. This session addresses the TQS competencies: #1: Fostering Effective Relationships, #2: Engaging in Career-Long Learning, #3: Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge, #4: Establishing Inclusive Learning Environments and #5: Applying Foundational Knowledge about First Nations, Metis and Inuit.
*Please bring a cultural artifact to your session with Dr. Glanfield. A cultural artifact can be any object/artifact that you feel represents a culture (in any way that the individual defines culture).

Dr Florence Glanfield
Dr Florence Glanfield is of Métis ancestry from Northeastern Alberta and is a professor of mathematics education, and chair of the Department of Secondary Education, at the University of Alberta. Dr Glanfield’s research interests explore the experiences that individuals (teachers and learners) as well as collectives of learners / communities have with mathematics and learning mathematics. Dr Glanfield collaborates with colleagues and has engaged in research projects with Canadian Indigenous communities, urban Aboriginal youth, elementary & secondary mathematics teachers, and primary teachers and teacher educators in Tanzania. One of the Dr Glanfield’s current research projects is with colleagues from Quebec and Nova Scotia and is around the ways in which Indigenous and ‘Western’ knowledge systems interact in mathematics and science education. Dr Glanfield’s career has included opportunities to work with students and teachers in all regions of Canada, in the US, and in Tanzania; teach high school mathematics; work with the Alberta Ministry of Education to develop provincial mathematics curriculum, participate in implementation of provincial curriculum, develop student assessment materials; and organize national and international fora. Dr Glanfield’s been actively involved in, and has served in leadership roles with provincial, national, and international professional organizations.
