Building Educational Equity from the Inside Out is a self-guided, comprehensive professional development experience. Its goal is to build academic success for ALL students. Participants are guided through processes to identify barriers to equitable achievement within their own educational context, and subsequently, to identify strategies to remove those barriers. This work is done on three levels: the personal, institutional, and professional.

  • Do you have students in your classroom, school, or district who are not reaching and exceeding  a common standard?
  • Do you have students from marginalized groups or groups that have experienced oppression?

If the answer is “yes” to either of these questions, this research-based PD will help participants find a place to start with educational transformation to build academic equity.

Kim Barker-Kay shares her story and research that took place over a number of years. Her work focused on her context within northern Alberta and began with research into barriers to Indigenous student achievement. The search for strategies to remove these barriers led her to the understanding that almost all the research and work was relevant to any schools with students who have been marginalized or who are from groups that have experienced oppression, including living in poverty; living with trauma, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, etc. etc.

Building Educational Equity from the Inside Out includes an 8 minute video; a 41 minute slide presentation with audio; a Facilitator Guide with recommendations on how to set up a variety of workshops; and 8 Learning Guides.
