Learning Opportunities

In this comprehensive workshop, geared for educators in grades 2 - 8, you will learn the necessary instructional tools to support deeper literary analysis and comprehension, confidently teach narrative writing and be empowered to provide specific actionable feedback when assessing student work. You will see the clear connection between understanding foundational writing skills to effectively respond to text. This is the "how to" instruction that you have been looking for. All sessions will be facilitated by a member of the Empowering Writers Instructional training team and will be divided into 4 manageable 1.5- hour sessions to optimimze online learning. Registration includes a downloadable Guidebook and Certificate of Participation after attending all 4 live sessions. Opportunities for small group work, discussion and reflection will be provided.

Session 1: FOCUS - Reading with Author's Eyes for Deeper Understanding - Instructional Methodology, Genre and Organization, Annotation and Analysis, Narrative Skills - Entertaining Beginnings

Session 2: FOCUS - Foundational Skills for recognizing and generating description, character development and motivation, and story tension: Elaborative Detail, What do Feelings Look Like?, Suspense

Session 3: FOCUS - Foundational Skills for creating a fully developed main event, wrapping up a story and the application of skills through process writing: Main Event, Extended Endings, Process Writing and Rubrics

Session 4: FOCUS - Review of Skills & Applying Literary Analysis to Constructed Response
